The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) urges federal government to minimum wage #45,000

The Nigerian Labour Conne hard on the federal government over proposed increase of the N18,000 minimum wage.

Speaking to Vanguard, the president of NLC Ayuba Wabba called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to abandon the union’s request.

Wabba said the increase in the minimum wage is the logic used by the United States of America to address recession.

He NLC leader said Nigeria’s economy can only return to a desired state when citizens get hold of the purchasing power.

“The state of the country’s economy requires that we increase minimum wage. We need to empower the people to buy and sell,” Wabba said.

“If the economy is at standstill and people cannot buy, the economy will not grow.

“It is the workers money that keeps the economy growing. It is not the fund disbursed for big contracts that are kept in different accounts that keeps the country economy growing. That was the logic that helped the United State to revive their economy,” he said.

On several occasions, the Nigerian government has promised to increase the current N18,000 minimum wage.

In May, The secretary to the government of the federation Babachir Lawal said the federal government and the NLC had agreed to set up a 16-man committee to work out a befitting minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The establishment of the committee came after the NLC proposed an increase of the minimum wage from N18,000 to N45,000.
