ASUU gives Buhari ultimatum to sack education minister

Striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

The union said the minister is insensitive and lacks commitment to reversing the dwindling Nigerian education sector.

Making the call via a press statement the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Chairperson of the union, Dr Ndamisa Mohammed Attaahiru said the ongoing strike wouldn’t have been necessary if the minister has been alive to his responsibility.

ASUU added that  Mr Adamu failed to engage with the union on its repeated demands and correspondences.
“We see the minister as a stumbling block. He is our custodian; he is our intermediary between the union and Mr President. Since this government came on board, ASUU has been trying to get access to Mr. President; the minister has not allowed that communication between our union and Mr. President”

“He should be removed because you cannot stay in a place you are not doing your job. If he was very sensitive to the issues today, I don’t think this strike will have been called for. If his removal will bring prosperity to education because Nigeria is bigger than an individual in this country, we must move forward. If a minister is sitting down on his seat and sabotaging the efforts of education, I think he should be removed. He doesn’t need to be there.”

Atahiru further confirmed that the branch will join the industrial action as directed by the national headquarters of the union

“We in this branch had our congress today and our congress resolved today 15th November 2015, that we are to commence the strike as directed by NE and the strike is total, comprehensive.

“We are withdrawing all academic services”.

On the fate of the strike if after one week, the government did not show positive response, he declared that the action would continue.

“we have one week, two weeks, three weeks and continued negotiations.  If nothing is done after one week, we will reevaluate the situation on ground and move to the next option which is two weeks. If after two weeks nothing is done we will look at the situation and move to three weeks. If after three weeks nothing is done, we will go on full blown strike. The notice of the strike must have been served the minister because we don’t have secrets,” he said
