Timi Dakolo took to Instagram to express his views on the Pidgin language and why it should be adopted as lingua franca. In a rather long post, he went through history, through geography to explain the strong effect that language has on a people. He believes that the Pidgin language will unify Nigerians than the English Language has.

What binds us as Africans?? Lol. We are actually various tribes and ethnic groups dwelling and coexisting within the Niger area, hence the name Nigerians. Note that we have been coexisting and engaging with one another through commerce even before the coming of the British. I think the question should be, what will strengthen our togetherness as we have never truly been apart. The strengthening of our coexistence should be our major objective. If you ask me, I would say, let's make and promote the Pidgin English as our primary language because it tells a story of our past, that we once went through the ordeals of colonialism and while trying to speak the white man's language, came up with our own. It tells us about our present, spoken by a vast number majority of the people both literates and non literates, about our future... Want to know why most politicians, actors and other elites first pay attention and condolences to the West when a tragic occurrence occurs before they pay mind to that here at home? It is basically due to a form of mind programming that has evolved over the years, through colonialism, whereby an "us versus them" mentality was held by the British towards Nigerians. The elites who took over the British when they left didn't discard this type of mindset but unconsciously lived it, having acquired the British culture and education, thought themselves to be British. Language creates a strong bond, I believe promoting the Pidgin language will among us.
